Streszczenie:
We are familiar with Euclidean geometry, which we study through concepts such as length, angle, area, and parallel lines. In practice, however, many other geometries arise naturally: in geography we encounter spherical geometry; in drawing and perspective, projective geometry becomes unavoidable; and in robotics and navigation, it is natural to consider ordered geometry. These geometries can be less intuitive, and it is not always clear which notions should play the role of “length” or “angle,” or what the right geometric invariants should be.
In this talk, I will explain how group theory provides a systematic framework for identifying the fundamental concepts of a geometry by studying its symmetries. I will introduce the basic language of groups and show, through concrete examples, how geometric structure can be revealed and organized by the actions of groups.
