XXVI Lower Silesian Science Festival at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science of the University of Wrocław

Categories:

We invite you to the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science of the University of Wrocław for lectures as part of the Lower Silesian Science Festival. The lectures will take place in Wednesday 20 September 2023 in room 25 of the Institute of Computer Science of the University of Wrocław at ul. Joliot-Curie 15 in Wrocław.

We cordially invite you to the XXI Mathematical Marathon

Registration for lectures (for groups of 5 people upwards, single people do not have to register in advance): promocja@cs.uni.wroc.pl

Schedule:

  • 11:15 Marek Adamczyk (II UWr) On making money on the stock market with the theorem of cosine

During the lecture I will talk about a certain algorithmic approach to playing the stock market, the mathematical essence of which is the clever use of cosine.

  • 12:10 Paweł Rychlikowski (II UWr) What can and cannot large language models such as chatGPT?

ChatGPT made publicly available last year breaks records of popularity, arouses curiosity, but also controversy and concerns. During the lecture, we will consider what to expect from this type of tools and what are their limitations.

  • 13:10 Jarosław Wróblewski (IM UWr) Time bombs in numerical sequences

During the lecture, we will learn examples of numerical sequences that behave in a surprising way – completely different from what could be concluded from the observation of many initial words.

  • 14:15 Zbigniew J. Jurek (IM UWr) Is it worth tossing a coin?

In everyday life we encounter situations in which we do not know the results of our actions. Based on a few examples, we will show how probability calculus helps in such situations. We will remember Caspar Neumann (from Breslau/Wrocław) and his participation in the creation of the so-called survival boards. We will tell you how to win the race on a series of random digits, as well as how "throwing the needle on the floor" we can determine the number pi.< / em>< / li>
